It was the 3rd act of James Cameron's "Terminator" in which the terrifying half human, half machine 'terminator' played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, was pursuing Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese within a fuel truck. But then Kyle Reese threw a stick of dynamite inside the truck. Now engulfed in a burning inferno, the fast pace drums went to silence.
I was 8 years old at the time. I was sitting on the couch as well as my siblings. My parents on their reclined chairs, all watching. Despite the couches comfy pillows, all of us were barely sitting. The text book definition of "being on the edge of our seat" while we waited for definitive relief or dread as the terminators fate. That moment of jaw dropping suspense, intense action and characters I needed to see come out the other side. That was the moment I wanted to pursue film.
I lived in a house of engineers and government workers. I lived my prior life of a child unaware of the world around me. Mainly driven by my discipline to succeed in school, I enrolled in the subjects of Physics, Accelerated Mathematics, Biology and English Advanced. I received a 92.7 ATAR.
However looking back on my schooling life I always found the most fulfilling moments weren't the marks, but the experiences I created. Tinkering with both film and game design while still at school, I would present these projects to my friends to provoke strong emotional responses.
Now I work intentionally to create and improve my skills of cinematographer, screenwriter and editor.
